Enviroserv Chloorkop Landfill Gas Recovery
Project Wins Approval

First Private Landfill Gas CDM Project for South Africa

WESTBROOK, ME — Catherine A. Lee, managing director of Lee International, is pleased to announce approval by the South African government for the Enviroserv Chloorkop landfill gas recovery project. The approval, granted by the Designated National Authority (DNA) for South Africa, marks the first private landfill gas Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) project to be approved in South Africa.

Lee heads the advisory team assisting Enviroserv Waste Management Pty Ltd. in the development of the project under the Kyoto Protocol and the United Nations Framework Convetion on Climate Change. "This is an historic step for South Africa in greenhouse gas trading," said Lee, "the project demonstrates how developing countries and private companies can help to achieve sustainable development using the Clean Development Mechansim."

The project is located in the Chloorkop Industrial Area, Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality, Gauteng and will capture and flare methane generated from the landfill site. The project will explore opportunities to utilize the methane gas in the first year of operations.

The project will now request registration by the CDM Executive Board of the Kyoto Protocol.
