Lee International Negotiates ERPA Between
Ekurhuleni Metropolitan and Endesa
Participates in Signing Ceremony at Carbo Expo Cologne
COLOGNE, GERMANY Catherine
A. Lee, managing director of Lee International, will participate today in the signing ceremony for an emission reduction purchase agreement (ERPA) between Spanish electric utility Endesa and Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality (EMM) of South Africa. The signing takes place at Carbon Expo, the global carbon market fair and conference, taking place this week in Cologne.
Lee International negotiated the ERPA for the city of Ekurhuleni with the power provider. Other EMM advisors include Landfills Plus, Inc. of the USA and Palmer Development Group and Mallinicks Attorneys of South Africa. Endesa was assisted by Climate Focus of the Netherlands.
The project portfolio consists of four landfills owned and managed by EMM. Landfill gas will be extracted during the ongoing operations of the sites and at least 1.6 million tons of harmful emissions will be avoided by 2012. The projects fulfill the ambition of both EMM and Endesa to contribute to sustainable development, create jobs in South Africa and reduce emissions that contribute to global warming.
Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality is a municipality in South Africa's Gauteng province, adjacent to Johannesburg and Pretoria. EMM is known as the industrial heart of the country and generates about 42% of the province's gross domestic product. EMM aims at a professional and efficient environmental policy. The current landfill gas projects are part of the ongoing effort to improve waste management practices in the municipality, reduce the environmental impact and create benefits for the population.
Endesa is a major energy utility in Spain and Latin America and one of the premier players in the European power markets. Endesa has grown to be one of the most successful participants in the CDM markets through its Endesa Climate Initiative. As part of its global commitment to reduce its contribution to global warming, Endesa has made a substantial commitment to buy emission reductions from projects in developing countries over the last year. The contract with EMM is Endesa's first carbon contract in Africa.
