Lee International Leads Advisory Team for Landfill-Gas-To-Energy Project, Joburg, SA

JOBURG, SOUTH AFRICA — Lee International has been appointed to lead a multi-disciplinary team of transaction advisors to the City of Johannesburg, South Africa. The team will advise the City on all aspects of the development of five of its landfills into a landfill-gas-to-energy Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) project. Joburg has appointed Ener-G Systems, to develop and register the projects in compliance with the Kyoto Protocol.

In addition to reducing methane emissions, the goal of this landfill-gas-to-energy project is to capture and convert the gas to electricity and to sell the greenhouse gas emission reductions to entities looking to offset their emissions in order to comply with their obligations under the Protocol.

The Lee International consortium of advisors includes Landfills Plus, Inc. of Chicago and Jones & Wagener Engineering, Ardeer Engineering and Webber Wentzel Attorneys of South Africa. The team was selected on the basis of its extensive experience with CDM project development in South Africa and around the world. The advisors will represent the City of Joburg in contract negotiations, technical project development, implementation and essentially all other aspects of the project.

For more information on Joburg's first landfill-gas-to-energy project, and first notable Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) project, see Joburg to tap landfill energy on the City of Joburg web site.

Lee International helps organizations benefit strategically and financially from carbon emissions trading schemes. Our focus is on Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) projects in developing countries, emission reduction projects for the voluntary markets in the USA and Europe, and the new mandatory regional trading programs in the USA, such as the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative (RGGI). The firm provides a full complement of legal, regulatory and advisory services connecting buyers and sellers in Brazil, South Africa, China, Canada, EU, and the USA, while monitoring emerging carbon trading programs in the United States.
